It’s been about a year since I first heard about the legend of Liquid Mike. A simple tweet led me to discovering one of my favorite new bands. If you followed any of my playlists last year, you probably heard a song or two by Liquid Mike on them.
Their fifth album Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot is out today and has been getting high praise this week from the likes of Stereogum (it’s the album of the week!) & Paste, which
It was a pleasure to sit down and chat with Mike Maple (guitar, vocals & harmonica) about this album. Hear about the influences that shaped the sound, the nods to '90s alternative icons, and the meticulous thought that went into crafting an album that seamlessly blends nostalgia with a contemporary twist. We also play tracks by bar italia and Ex Pilots. Listen to the full episode below:
What better day to pick up this album than on it’s release day - which also happens to be Bandcamp Friday. [Digital / Vinyl / Cassette]
January 2024: Top 13 Songs
Each month I narrow down 13 songs from my 2024: Favorite Songs playlist (there were 137 tracks added from January alone!) and place them into my Top 13 playlist. Here are the songs you should check out from last month:
1. Waxahatchee ft MJ Lenderman - Right Back To It: The grand return of Katie Crutchfield, where insecurity intertwines with intimacy, all backed by incredible vocals by MJ Lenderman.
Future Islands - Give Me The Ghost Back: The masters of synth pop are back! This track from their new album People Who Aren’t There Anymore was an instant favorite. I think it’s about time to revisit their deep discography.
Barely Civil - Better Now: An all-timer rock chorus that begs to be chanted at a live show.
Abigail Rose - Run Girl: The vibe of this song is undeniable and instantly turned me into a fan.
Cheekface - Life in a Bag: America's local band takes us on a catchy and clever journey, showcasing their incredible, witty songwriting.
Phosphorescent - Revelator: Another grand return on the playlist! This time from Matthew Houck whose return unfolds with ethereal Americana, where each lyric and melody wraps around you like an old friend.
Ian St. George - Waste My Time: There’s hardly any info about this person online, or is it simply a band name? We may never know. Song is catchy as hell though.
Bullion ft Carly Rae Jepesen - Rare: A delightful collaboration that merges Bullion's world with Carly Rae Jepsen's pop prowess.
Pouty - TV on TV: Rachel Gagliardi takes you on a California journey with massive guitars, pounding drums, and '90s nostalgia.
Low Girl - Icarus: It’s an alt-pop earworm that is hopefully the first of more Low Girl tracks to come this year.
Cuffed Up - Finer Things: This track races ahead with anthemic choruses and a longing for forever.
Boeckner - Lose: The first taste of Daniel Boeckner's new project, and the first under his own name. You might know his work with Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs & Divine Fits, to name a few.
Sarah Jarosz - Don't Break Down On Me: Indie folk with a synthy backgroup in this soulful plea, tugging at the heartstrings with warmth and emotion.
Let me know what you think of these songs & if I missed something you had on repeat last month. That’s all I got!
